President Murmu inaugurates the nation’s stealth warship ‘INS Vindhyagiri’ in Kolkata on 16th Aug 2023 at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd’s (GRSE) facility on the banks of Hooghly River at Kidderpore in Kolkata.

What is INS Vindhyagiri

The warship “INS Vindhyagiri” stands as an exemplary advanced stealth frigate, marking the sixth completion out of the seven ships constructed as part of the Navy’s ‘Project 17 Alpha’. The initial five vessels of this initiative were ceremoniously launched between 2019 and 2022.

The ship will undergo thorough testing and be outfitted with the latest technology before being commissioned by the Indian Navy.

  • Incorporating cutting-edge technology, this ship aptly honours the distinguished legacy of its precursor, the former INS Vindhyagiri, which served as a Leander Class ASW Frigate.
  • The old Vindhyagiri in its nearly 31 years of service from 08 Jul 81 to 11 Jun 12, had witnessed various challenging operations.
  • It is the sixth ship of the Project 17A Frigates.
  • These naval vessels are successors to the Project 17 Class Frigates, also known as the Shivalik Class with improved features and advanced platform management systems.
